In Vendor, Arkansas, the Buffalo National River is not a destination you drive to and drive home from. It is the landscape you wake up in. Big Creek — a tributary of the Buffalo — runs along the property at Buffalo River Misty Creek Lodge, and the river itself is a short drive in several directions.
This is a private cabin rental on five wooded acres, owned and operated by Liz and Juergen since 2009. One cabin, one set of guests at a time, no shared anything. A full kitchen, wood-burning fireplace, hot tub, covered porch, fire pit, and direct creek access.
If you are searching for a cabin near the Buffalo River, this page covers what you need to know — where the cabin is, how close you are to the river, what the cabin includes, and what you can do from here.

How Close the Cabin Is to the Buffalo River
The lodge sits on Big Creek in Vendor, five miles south of Jasper on Scenic Highway 7. The Buffalo National River runs through this part of Newton County, and the closest access points are all a short drive:
Steel Creek:
15 minutes. One of the most popular put-in points on the upper Buffalo. Campground, swimming hole, and bluff overlook on site.
Ponca:
20 minutes. Low-water bridge access, outfitter hub for canoe and kayak rentals, and the starting point for the Ponca-to-Kyle’s float.
Kyles Landing:
20 minutes. A quieter access point with a gravel bar for swimming and a put-in for floating downstream.
Boxley Valley:
15 minutes. Elk viewing area along the river corridor. The Buffalo flows through the valley with several pull-off spots.
Ozark (town)
45 minutes south. Access to the lower Buffalo for longer, calmer floats.
You are never more than 20 minutes from the river for the upper section, which is the most scenic and most popular stretch.
What the Cabin Includes
The lodge is not a bare-bones rental where you bring your own sheets. It is set up as a complete, self-contained stay. Here is what you get:
Inside:
Full kitchen (stove, oven, refrigerator, coffee maker, cookware, dishes), wood-burning fireplace, comfortable bedding, bathroom with hot water, Wi-Fi, heating and air conditioning.
Outside:
Covered porch facing Big Creek, outdoor hot tub under the tree canopy, stone fire pit with seating, creek bank access, grassy clearing, parking at the cabin door.
Provided:
Firewood (split and stacked), linens, towels, dish soap, paper towels, trash bags, laundry detergent, toilet paper, fire log starters, and a solar shower for the hot tub.
Not provided:
Groceries, fishing gear, hiking gear, personal items. The nearest grocery store is in Jasper, five miles north. Harrison has a larger selection 35 miles north.
The cabin works for couples, families, and small groups — it sleeps up to 11 guests across four bedrooms. It functions as a small home — you can cook, settle in, and stay for a night or a month.

Floating the Buffalo River from the Cabin
The Buffalo is a free-flowing river — no dams — so water levels depend entirely on rain. Floating season typically runs from May through October, with the best and most consistent levels in spring (May–June) after seasonal rains.
Local outfitters in Ponca and Jasper rent canoes, kayaks, and tubes, and provide shuttle service to and from put-in and take-out points. You do not need to own a boat or haul one to the property.
Half-day floats
(3–4 hours) cover roughly 5 to 8 miles. The Ponca-to-Kyles Landing section is the most popular on the upper Buffalo. Expect Class I–II water in spring, calmer conditions by midsummer.
Full-day floats
cover longer sections and are better for guests who want to stop, swim, and explore gravel bars along the way.
Water levels are posted by the United States Geological Survey at gauge stations along the river. Your outfitter will know current conditions and can recommend the best section for your skill level and the day’s water.
After a day on the river, the drive back to the cabin is 15 to 20 minutes, and the hot tub is waiting.

Fishing near the Buffalo River
The Buffalo National River and its tributaries hold smallmouth bass, rock bass, longear sunfish, and green sunfish. Big Creek, which runs along the lodge property, is fishable from the bank without driving anywhere.
Wade fishing is the primary method on both the creek and the river. The Buffalo is shallow enough in most upper sections to walk and cast. Spring and fall produce the best smallmouth fishing. Summer still works, but lower water concentrates fish in deeper pools and shaded runs.
An Arkansas fishing license is required. You can purchase one online through the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission before your trip. Catch-and-release is encouraged throughout the Buffalo, and some sections have specific harvest limits.
You do not need a boat. You do not need a guide. A light spinning rod, a few small lures or live bait, and a pair of water shoes are enough to get started on Big Creek or the river.
The cabin’s full kitchen lets you cook your catch if the regs allow and the fish cooperate.

Hiking and Outdoor Activities near the Cabin
The trailheads closest to the lodge cover a range of difficulty and distance:
Whitaker Point (Hawksbill Crag):
3-mile round trip. Moderate. The most photographed spot in Arkansas — a rock ledge over a wide valley. Best early morning. 25 minutes from the cabin.
Lost Valley:
2.3-mile round trip. Easy. Cave at the end of a flat trail. Good for families. 20 minutes from the cabin.
Indian Rockhouse:
3.2-mile round trip. Moderate. Massive natural rock shelter. Less crowded. 25 minutes from the cabin.
Steel Creek Overlook:
Short and steep. Bluff view over the Buffalo River. 15 minutes from the cabin.
Boxley Valley Elk Viewing:
Not a hike — drive through and watch from your car or the roadside. Elk graze in open fields at dawn and dusk. 15 minutes.
Beyond hiking, guests kayak, canoe, swim, photograph waterfalls, and drive Scenic Highway 7 between Jasper and Harrison. In winter, the trails are empty and the bare-tree views are wider.
A week at the cabin is not enough to do everything. Most guests pick three or four activities and leave the rest for the next trip.

Why Guests Choose a Cabin over a Hotel near the Buffalo River
Hotels in the Buffalo River corridor are limited. Harrison, 35 miles north, has chain hotels. Jasper has a few small options. But none of them put you on the water, in the woods, with a fire pit and a hot tub and no one else around.
A cabin rental gives you:
- A full kitchen instead of a vending machine
- A creek out the back door instead of a parking lot view
- A fire pit under the stars instead of a lobby TV
- Privacy instead of thin walls and hallway noise
- Space to spread out instead of a single room
For a one-night stopover, a hotel works fine. For a real trip to the Buffalo River — two nights, three nights, a week — a cabin changes how the trip feels. You are not visiting the Ozarks from a room. You are living in them.
The lodge is owner-operated, which means Liz and Juergen handle every booking, answer every question, and maintain the property themselves. That is a different experience from a hotel front desk or a corporate property manager.
